A familiar legacy
The story of Valdecamellas is a living tale of tradition, effort, and love for the land, a legacy that dates back to the early 20th century and has been carefully passed down through generations.
It all began when the first generation of winemakers in the family, driven by a vision and entrepreneurial spirit, decided to embark on a journey to La Ribera del Duero, an iconic place in the wine world, to acquire cuttings with which to plant the first vineyards. This simple act marked the beginning of a winemaking heritage that still endures with the same passion and commitment as it did then.
The Sacrifice
Over the years, the founders of Valdecamellas began to understand the secrets of the land and climate of their region. Harsh winters, scorching summers, and the mild, fresh breezes of the intermediate seasons became allies that shaped the unique character of the grapes grown in the first plots of the estate. At that time, viticulture was a laborious and sacrificial task, carried out with rudimentary tools and a strong reliance on natural cycles. However, for this family, working the land was never just a means of survival, but a way of life and an expression of their connection to the environment.
In the following decades, Valdecamellas grew both in size and prestige. The original vineyards gave way to new plots, carefully selected for their unique characteristics. Each generation added its personal touch, perfecting the cultivation and production techniques. By the mid-20th century, the second generation took on the challenge of consolidating the winery as a family project. With a profound respect for the inherited traditions, they introduced innovations that improved the quality of the wine without compromising its authenticity.
our history

The plantation
In 1886, we marked a milestone in our history by planting the vineyards that are now the heart of Valdecamellas. In the fertile region of the Ribera del Duero, we carefully selected plots with varied soil compositions —clay, limestone, and alluvial— to ensure a perfect balance between the terroir characteristics and the potential of the grapes. This project not only represented a commitment to winemaking tradition but also a vision for the future, by embracing sustainable and environmentally friendly techniques.
The choice of grape varieties was meticulous, with Tempranillo as the star, accompanied by other strains that would enrich the aromatic and structural diversity of our wines. Each plant was placed by hand, following a design that respected wind currents, sun orientation, and the unique features of each plot. This effort aimed not only to optimize the quality of production but also to preserve the intimate connection with nature that defines our philosophy. Since then, these vineyards have been cultivated with dedication, becoming the soul of our vintages and a legacy for future generations.

Filoxera
At the beginning of the 20th century, the arrival of phylloxera marked a period of uncertainty and despair in European vineyards, severely impacting the Ribera del Duero. However, our vines, with extraordinary resilience, managed to survive this devastating plague. Thanks to the sandy composition of some of our soils and traditional cultivation practices, our grapevines remained strong, preserving their essence at a time when many others were lost.
This resilience was not just a triumph of nature but also of the ingenuity and dedication of those who worked the land. It was a moment of challenge that solidified our connection with the vines and strengthened our commitment to viticulture. This episode not only marked our history but also became a symbol of resilience and legacy, ensuring that our vines continued to produce exceptional grapes for future generations.

Trifón
Trifón, our father, was much more than a vintner; he was the guardian of a legacy that had been passed down through generations. With hands hardened by labor and a heart full of passion for the land, he dedicated his life to nurturing the vineyards he inherited from his parents and grandparents. Under his watchful eye, the vines thrived, and the family tradition found in him a steadfast defender, determined to preserve the essence and authenticity that had always characterized our vineyards.
His work involved not only maintaining inherited practices but also perfecting them, adapting to the challenges of each era without losing sight of the core values that had guided his family for decades. Trifón treated each plot like a temple, respecting nature and possessing a deep knowledge of the soil and climate. His dedication was the seed that allowed our winery to evolve, carrying the name Valdecamellas beyond our lands, yet always with strong roots in tradition. His memory lives on in every bunch, in every bottle, and in every sip of our wines.

Mariano
Mariano, our brother, was a free and passionate spirit, deeply connected to the land that raised us. His love for nature was innate, and with every step he took among the vineyards, he seemed to find a harmony that transcended words. At just 42 years old, his life was cut short, leaving an irreparable void in our family and in the heart of Valdecamellas.
Mariano saw the vine as a living being, and his dedication to the vineyards went beyond technique: it was an art, a way of life. He spent hours nurturing the vines, observing the changes in the soil, the weather, and each bunch that grew under his watchful eye. His tragic passing, in the midst of nature, reminds us of the fragility of life, but also of its intensity and beauty. His legacy lives on in every wine we produce, in the authentic character of our vineyards, and in our commitment to continue honoring the land he loved so much. Mariano will always be a part of Valdecamellas, and his memory inspires us to move forward with the same love and respect that he devoted to our winery.

Javier
Javier, with a blend of determination and deep respect, took up the mantle of his brother Mariano following his untimely departure, ensuring that his dream, Valdecamellas, not only continued but thrived. Driven by the memory of Mariano and his passion for the land, Javier took on the responsibility of preserving and breathing life into the legacy his brother left behind, transforming the pain of loss into a source of inspiration and strength.
Under his leadership, Valdecamellas evolved into a winery that honors its roots while looking to the future. Javier devoted his effort and heart to perfecting every detail, from caring for the vineyards to crafting wines that captured the essence of our land and our history. He worked tirelessly to keep alive the connection to the principles that guided Mariano: respect for nature, love for viticulture, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Today, Mariano's dream lives on in every bottle that bears the name Valdecamellas. Javier has not only succeeded in continuing the legacy but has also expanded it, making our winery a symbol of tradition, passion, and perseverance. Each sip of our wines is a tribute to Mariano and the indomitable spirit of Javier, who has kept the flame of a dream alive that continues to shine to this day.
The relevance of microplots
The third generation, which grew up among the vineyards and barrels, took on the role of guardians of the legacy. They were the ones who began to conceptualize the microplots that characterize Valdecamellas today. These small vineyard units, managed as independent entities, allowed for a deeper understanding of the soils and varieties, perfecting the ability to produce wines with a unique and defined personality.
Currently, the fourth generation of the family leads Valdecamellas, with a vision that combines tradition and modernity. Inspired by family roots and with a deep respect for the land, they have managed to position the winery’s wines as a benchmark in the D.O. Ribera del Duero. Their commitment to sustainability and excellence continues to guide every decision, from vineyard cultivation to label design, through a meticulous production process that honors both the past and the future of the winery.
Valdecamellas is not just a winery; it is a symbol of how passion and effort can transform nature into liquid art. It is the living testament of a family that has dedicated its life to capturing the essence of their land, their history, and their legacy in every bottle.
