A mosaic of soils, climate, andtradition
The Valdecamellas vineyards are much more than just cultivated land: they are a reflection of the diversity and richness of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. Composed of 36 micro-parcels, these vineyards are the beating heart of the winery, where each grape cluster is born in an environment that combines tradition, knowledge, and respect for nature.
Located in terrains that range from sandy and clay to calcareous and alluvial, the Valdecamellas vineyards constitute a true geological mosaic. This diversity not only influences cultivation but also translates into the ability to produce wines with unique and singular profiles. Each parcel has its own personality, shaped by factors such as altitude, sun exposure, and soil characteristics, all of which are worked with specific techniques designed to maximize their potential.
A daunting task
One of the most striking aspects of these vineyards is the Old Vineyard, a collection of century-old vines that represent the living memory of Valdecamellas’ past. These low-yielding vines produce a scarce yet exceptionally high-quality fruit, concentrating all their energy into each grape. The Old Vineyard is, in essence, the cornerstone of the winery, and its cultivation requires extreme care and constant attention.
The management of the plots is done in a handcrafted manner, respecting the natural balance of the ecosystem. Sustainable viticulture is an absolute priority, and every agricultural practice is designed to preserve soil health and promote biodiversity. Pruning, leaf removal, and manual harvesting are just a few methods that ensure the grapes reach their maturity under the best possible conditions.
The vineyards of Valdecamellas are the soul of the winery. They represent the intimate connection between the family and their land, a relationship that has evolved over generations but has always been guided by the same principles: respect, passion, and the pursuit of excellence. They are the place where the magic begins, the origin of wines that tell stories and evoke emotions with every sip.
The essential role of climate in the Valdecamellas vineyards
The climate is a determining factor in the life and quality of the vineyards of Valdecamellas, and its influence manifests itself in every phase of the winemaking cycle. The Ribera del Duero, with its extreme continental climate, offers unique conditions that challenge and enhance the grapevines, becoming an indispensable ally in the creation of exceptional wines. Winters are harsh, with temperatures dropping significantly, creating an environment that promotes the rest of the vines and the natural control of pests, without the need for artificial interventions. This winter dormancy prepares the plants to face the challenges of the upcoming season, strengthening their resilience and health.
As the year progresses, spring brings an explosion of life, although it is not without risks. Late frosts, characteristic of this region, can test the skill and experience of the winemakers. Every decision made during this season, from pruning to soil management, is crucial for ensuring the optimal development of the vines. On the other hand, summer is marked by warm, sunny days, ideal for the growth of the clusters, and cool nights that allow the grapes to retain their acidity and develop a rich and complex aromatic palette.
The marked daily temperature variation is perhaps one of the most distinctive characteristics of the climate in Ribera del Duero. These extreme fluctuations between daytime heat and nighttime coolness contribute to the slow ripening of the grapes, a process that allows aromas and flavors to concentrate precisely. This interaction between temperature and time leaves a unique imprint on Valdecamellas wines, giving them a vibrant freshness, solid structure, and depth that makes them recognizable and appreciated. Autumn, on the other hand, becomes a critical period where climatic conditions must be carefully monitored, as unexpected rains or sudden temperature changes can significantly influence the quality of the harvest.
In this demanding yet generous environment, Valdecamellas has learned to work in harmony with nature, respecting the rhythms that the climate imposes and seizing every challenge as an opportunity for improvement. This commitment to the land and its particularities translates into wines that reflect the authenticity and unique character of this privileged region.
