Albillo Mayor 2025
Description
Albillo Mayor is the native white grape of the Duero, and it was only admitted as a principal variety of the D.O. Ribera del Duero in November 2019. Barely 1.3% of the appellation is planted with it. This is the wine that carries the family name, and it is not a secondary wine.
History and Winemaking
100% Albillo Mayor from selected plots across Fresnillo de las Dueñas, Fuentespina and Fuentelcésped. Limestone in the soil, which is what holds the acidity; cold nights, which is what keeps it. A white with weight rather than a white with sugar.
Harvested by hand, plot by plot. Fermentation and ageing in French oak — not to flavour the wine, but to give it the slow oxygen it needs to build texture. Albillo has, in Tim Atkin’s words, a natural affinity with oak. Used carefully, it does not cover the grape; it lengthens it.
Made to be kept. This is a white with a horizon in the bottle, not a wine to be drunk cold and quickly on the year it is released.
